What is Exercise Physiology?

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are university-trained allied health professionals who specialise in the design and delivery of exercise programs for people with chronic conditions, injuries, and complex health needs. We use exercise as medicine — backed by science and tailored to you.

Exercise physiologists study the effect of exercise on the body, the mechanisms by which exercise can reduce or reverse disease, support optimal health and aid in recovery.

You may benefit from Exercise Physiology if you:

  • have a chronic health condition and want support using exercise to improve your health, confidence, and quality of life

  • are recovering from an injury, illness, surgery, or a period of reduced activity and want to safely rebuild your strength and movement

  • are living with pain, stiffness, fatigue, or reduced mobility and need support finding the right type and amount of exercise

  • have a condition such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurological conditions, respiratory conditions, or other chronic health conditions and want to use exercise as part of your management

  • have arthritis and want support to improve strength, reduce joint pain, maintain mobility, and keep doing the activities you enjoy

  • experience falls, reduced balance, weakness, or concerns about staying independent as you age

  • want to improve your strength, fitness, mobility, or confidence with exercise but aren’t sure where to start

  • are returning to exercise after having a baby, surgery, injury, or a significant life change and need a personalised approach

  • have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, or are concerned about your bone health and want to use exercise to build strength and support your bones

  • are managing your mental health and want to use movement and exercise to support your wellbeing, energy, confidence, and daily routine

  • are using GLP-1 medications for weight management and want guidance on exercise, strength training, and maintaining muscle and bone health throughout your journey

  • need support for yourself or someone you care about who may benefit from exercise at home, including home visits for those who find travelling difficult

  • have a goal you want to work towards — whether that’s returning to a favourite activity, preparing for an event, improving fitness, or simply feeling stronger in everyday life

How It Works

Getting started is simple. Here is what to expect when you come to Bass Coast Exercise Physiology.

Step 1: Initial Assessment

We start with a thorough assessment of your health history, goals, and current fitness level to understand what you need. We may discuss lifestyle management strategies and provide education on the physiology of your injury or condition, helping you understand how exercise can support your health.

We’ll look at how your body moves and work with you one-on-one to build a plan that suits your goals.

Together, we’ll create a plan that may include a personalised home exercise program, review appointments, or small group sessions - providing guidance to progress your activity levels, strength, and overall health.

Step 2. Personalised Activity Plan

Your exercise program is designed specifically for you - progressive, safe with all of your health needs clearly considered and built around your lifestyle and goals.
You may chose to join our Small Group Sessions for in person support or take a home exercise plan home with you.

Step 3: Ongoing Support

We check in regularly, progress your program, and celebrate your wins along the way.

Your ongoing support may include review appointments, regular small group sessions, and a personalised home exercise program with progress tracking and check-ins to help you stay on track between appointments.
